Official opening of Uist and Barra Sports Hub

6 June 2015

The official opening of the new Uist and Barra Sports Hub took place on Thursday with a special ceremony held at Sgoil Lìonacleit.

School pipers opened the short ceremony before Kerry MacPhee, 2015 British Mountain Bike Marathon Champion and 2014 Commonwealth Games competitor did the honours of opening the building.

Comhairle Convener, Norman A MacDonald said: “On behalf of the Comhairle I would like to formally thank all who have played a role in making this project and the opportunities it provides a reality.

"These facilities will provide information, support and advice on a wide range of sports and physical activities to make it easier for local people to get involved in sporting activities and engage in active and healthy lifestyles - one of the key aims of the Comhairle and the Community Planning Partnership.

"This is an opportunity to recognise that, together, we can create facilities and services the envy of many communities across Scotland.”

Iain MacAulay, Director of Social and Community Services said: “This is an excellent example of the investment possible when working in partnership. The Benbecula Sports and Leisure Trust began the process through accessing funding to enhance the playing field and changing provision."

He praised the volunteers, staff and sports people for their enthusiasm and commitment to make the business case for this investment and "help foster the talent we have in our communities.”
