Two people have thrown their hats into the ring for the contest to elect a new councillor for the Harris ward.

Kenny Macleod of Scalpay is standing as an independent, without any party affiliation.

Dr Steven Welsh of Stornoway is standing on behalf of the Scottish Family Party. His address is given as being within the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar area. The party plan to launch their Harris by-election campaign next Monday evening in Tarbert. Dr Welsh is also a candidate for the party in the general election.

The Harris ward vacancy occurred after Grant Fulton resigned from the role, leaving Paul Finnegan currently as the sole councillor representing the island.

The by-election in Harris takes place on 4 July, the same day as the UK general election.
