Truant hit by van when dodging police     5/9/10

A Lewis school boy playing truant was hit by a van when running away to evade police.

The 15-year-old and a friend were dodging school when the accident happened.

The pair had been reported to police by the Nicolson Institute for failing to attend school without permission.

The truants were around the exit to the Lews Castle Grounds area of the town and apparently ran away when they spotted a police car driving along. One of the boys dashed across the road but went straight into the path of an moving trades van.

It is understood the pair had immediately earlier spotted police officers on foot patrol looking for truants and panicked when they saw a police car approaching.

A police spokesman said: “The police vehicle was not pursuing the boys. They both ran off when they saw a police vehicle.

“The incident occurred about 3.45pm on Tuesday. A 15-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle on Bayhead. He was not injured and did not require hospital treatment.”

The accident was not the fault of the van driver. The boy’s father later picked him up fro Stornoway police station.
