Sir,

Two letters in less than a week in which the writers seem to think that there is nothing wrong with Trident, a weapon of mass destruction that we cannot use.

The first letter points out that more have died since 1945 from bee stings than from the effects of nuclear weapons. Perhaps I am mistaken in thinking that the effects of the bombs dropped over Japan continued for many years, and can still be seen if one takes the trouble to find out. I do not have the figure to prove it but surely more people have died from hunger than from bee stings and the £100 billion to replace Trident could feed an awful lot of people. That includes those reliant on the foodbank in Stornoway.

The second letter appears to be trying to tell us that a weapon over which we have no control and would kill millions if used should be compared to an act which is the decision of one person, and one person alone.

Two quotations from the Bible are used as justification for this view and as a layman I would not attempt to dispute his interpretation of his chosen passages. The first was “Thou shalt not kill.” Perhaps I could be enlightened on what effect Trident would have if it did not kill? Perhaps it would cure the common cold? Then he wants to know ‘where are the politicians who will open their mouths for the dumb and defenceless.’

The SNP do try, but with just 56 MPs in Westminster against a Tory government, ably assisted by the Labour Abstention Party, they must be finding it difficult.
