Murder accused asked if Liam got home safely      8/5/13

A man accused of killing South Uist teenager Liam Aitchison phoned to ask if he got home safely, Glasgow High Court heard this morning.

Jonathan Mackinnon, 22, and Stefan Millar, 22, deny murdering Liam Aitchison in November 2011.

Giving evidence, Stephanie Flannigan said she was a former girlfriend of Jonathon Mackinnon at the time.

The 22 year old, of Lewis, said she had not known Liam for long. They had met at her friend Emily Smith’s house just a couple of months or so before he died.

Liam commonly stayed at Ms Smith’s house or at Pemma Maclennan’s, she said.

She said they were friends and she was close to Mr Aitchison, like a brother.

Ms Flannigan told the court that she was at Pemma Maclennan’s house in MacCallum Place, Stornoway, on Tuesday 22 November 2011.

She said Mr Aitchison went to the Co-op supermarket and returned to the house with a bottle of vodka.

Later, Mr Aitchsion and Stefan Millar left the house together to meet up with Jonathon Mackinnon, she said.

She said Mackinnon telephoned her a few hours later, in the early hours of the next day, around 3am on the Wednesday, asking if Liam Aitchison had returned safely.

In the call, Mackinnon told her there had been a fight and Liam Aitchison had been heading back to Pemma’s house when they left him, said the witness.

Ms Flannigan said that Liam had not come back to the house.

Police had examined Ms Flannigan’s mobile phone and a number of text messages exchanged between her and Millar in the days immediately after Mr Aitchison went missing were read out in court.

In the texts Ms Flannigan asked Millar about the fight and if Liam had been in touch.

The witness agreed that, in response to one text, Millar had said Mackinnon had not done anything to Liam.

The trial before judge Lord Kinclaven continues.
