Hebrides News

A force 10 storm caused widespread disruption to Western Isles travellers today.

Planes to Barra, Benbecula and Stornoway were cancelled and delayed at the height of the bad weather. The mail plane was also held up for hours.

Castlebay and Lochboisdale ferries were cancelled.

The Sound of Barra ferry is suspended until late this (Thurs) morning at least.

The Stornoway ferry was stormbound in Ullapool all day but will carry transport passengers to the island this evening. Her morning run on Thursday is likely to be held up due to a knock-on delay from tonight’s freight service.

The MV Hebrides was forced to turn back to Tarbert after encountering a heavy swell. Her planned amended timetable was scrapped. Instead the vessel sailed a bumpy voyage to Skye when conditions dropped below a gale eight. She planned a run to Lochmaddy but was to tie up for the night on arrival.

MV Loch Portain managed one return crossing on the Sound of Harris route before dusk.
