Travel and tourism between Western Isles and mainland to resume this month Nicola Sturgeon announces

13 April 2021

Travel and tourism for the Western Isles will open up later this month, confirmed the First Minister.

Nicola Sturgeon made the announcement at lunchtime today.

She said: “Based on the balance of opinion” the Scottish Government has decided to “align the islands with the rest of the country for a period so therefore travel and parts of the economy - that so many islanders rely on - can operate more normally from the 26 April.”

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar welcomed the announcement.

Comhairle Leader, Cllr Roddie Mackay, said: “We are pleased that the confusion of the last few weeks has been cleared up and that the tourism sector now has some clarity and certainty and can plan ahead with confidence.

“We will continue to hold discussions on an ongoing basis with Scottish Government and public health in order for a further easing of restrictions, particularly within our islands, as soon as possible. On the available data we should certainly be expecting this to happen soon.”
