Oil rig owner, Transocean, is donating £120,000 to the community as a thank you gift.

The redundant drilling platform has now been salvaged and loaded onto a heavy lift ship, ready to be transported to Turkey for scrapping.

A Transocean spokesman said the firm was splitting the cash in two ways.

£60,000 is earmarked to help the Dalmore and Carloway community where the rig grounded on 8 August.

The other half will go into a fund to be awarded to island youngsters competing in sport with the primary aim is to financially help youth tackle the high cost of travel to mainland competitions.

The sports funding will be administered through the Western Isles Development Fund (WIDT), an arms-length charitable body set up by Western Isles Council.

The cash is specifically for wider use for youth across all the islands in the Outer Hebrides.

Western Isles Council has been in talks with Transocean over the donations.

Council leader, Angus Campbell, welcomed the donations, saying the company was keen to do something to help the local community.

Mr Campbell said: “This is a significant contribution towards the community in Dalmore and also the wider youth community across the islands.

He explained: “The proposal is to give £60,000 to the local community around Dalmore.”

He said initial suggestions flagged up a proposal for “coastal protection works round the cemetery area.”

"The other £60,000 will be delivered through the WIDT but it is targeted towards young people and access to sport - particularly the difficulties with travel and getting to sporting events.

“That will be a bidding fund across the Western Isles and will allow our young people to look for help attending these events.”

Mr Campbell added: “Transcoean very much recognise the co-operation from the community and how people have tried to ensure the safe removal of the rig.

“I think this is their way of saying thank you.”

The donation is on top of the economic bonanza from the rig recovery operation which saw personnel booking hotels and B&Bs as well as spending in shops.

Transocean also employed local labour with around 40 local firms benefiting.
