A rail strike on the mainland is likely to affect travellers using train services connecting with Western Isles ferries over the weekend.

Trains for Glasgow - Oban, Glasgow - Mallaig and Aberdeen - Inverness are due to be cancelled for Saturday and Sunday. Replacement buses will operate. However, space is limited and buses may leave earlier or later than the normal train timetable.

There will be reduced services on the Edinburgh  Inverness line.

Transport union, RMT, is staging industrial action on Saturday and Sunday after the reduced use of guards responsible for opening and closing the doors on trains.

Scot Rail say many services already run where the doors are operated by the driver and it always schedule a second person onboard trains
