A tradesman who towed a trailer behind his works van did not have the required licence for the load.
The weight of the tow was over the 750kg limit allowed for a driver with a just full car licence.
A heavier load requires people to sit a car and trailer test.
Scott Finlayson, 23, was towing a load of pallets when police stopped him on Olivers Brae, Stornoway, on 10 March, Stornoway Sheriff Court heard.
Procurator fiscal Karen Smith said: “A lot of people do get caught out with the small print.”
Finlayson,of Macleod Road, Stornoway, was fined £200 and had three points imposed on his licence.
