Lewis woman wins coveted Mòd traditional singing award     16/10/14

Lewis woman Ceitlin Smith (above)won the Traditional Gold Medal at the Royal National Mòd in Inverness tonight.

The 21-year-old from Aird Dell in Ness first entered the event in Dunoon 2012.

Ceitlin is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where she studied Gaelic song. She presently works at MG Alba in Stornoway.

Men’s winner was Ruairidh Cormack of Portree, a student at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. He makes it a family double as sister Eilidh took the ladies’ An Comunn Mòd Gold medal earlier today.

Qualifying heats saw the competitors, unaccompanied by music, sing it out at the finals in front of a crowded audience at Eden Court.

Though a younger competition - it started in 1971 - the "Trad" or Seann Nós more accurately reflects the Gaelic oral culture than the official Mòd Gold Medal style of singing.
