Trading Standards are again reminding island businesses to be aware of charity publishing scams which ask for sponsorship for booklets.

Scammers, often based in the north west of England cold call businesses to sponsor school books on topics such as road safety, drug awareness, child safety initiatives or similar.

Their telephone numbers tend to start with 0151 or 0161.

In order to make the scam sound more convincing the caller may say that the books are being published on behalf of a police or a fire brigade charity.

Businesses may also receive calls, e-mails or invoices looking for payment for advertising or sponsorship which the caller claims the company has previously agreed to.
