Outer Hebrides Tourism (OHT) has repeated its call to the Transport Minister to take urgent action over the state of ferry services to the Outer Hebrides.

The body warns the suspending the Ullapool -Stornoway car ferry service over April and May will cause a “huge impact to tourism businesses... with a knock on effect across the islands’ economy.”

There is added concern as Cal Mac has removed the online booking facility for the route for the whole summer, making it impossible for visitors to plan their holiday in 2015.

This is “putting the livelihoods of 100’s of people working in tourism at risk,” said the OHT, formerly known as the Outer Hebrides Tourism Industry Association

Donald Macarthur, of OHT, said “The very fact that the Scottish Government even think that doing this work in May is a viable option shows how out of touch and far removed they are from the communities which they are meant to serve. They are treating the population of the islands with a complete lack of respect”

Ian Fordham, chairman of OHT said: “We are repeating our request to Derek Mackay MSP to come to the islands and convene an emergency summit on ferry services with local businesses, Cal Mac, local authority and other stakeholders to agree action, before there is irreparable damage to the islands’ economies.

“There are fundamental issues with all the services to the Outer Hebrides which have been ignored for too long, from Stornoway and the Butt to Barra, and now is the time for him to take an interest and act on this.”
