Residents served by the Tolsta water works face potential disruption to their water supplies due to a blockage at a loch intake pipe.

Scottish Water said it is working to try and maintain normal water supplies tonight.

Debris blown by the high winds choked a pipeline supplying fresh water to the treatment works in the area.

“Working conditions are very challenging, but every effort will be made to clear the intake as soon as this can be done safely,” said the utility firm.

Scottish Water engineers are currently working to re-route alternative water supplies from Stornoway to serve as much of the affected area as possible.

Water is also being taken by road tanker to supplement supplies.

Some householders in the area might experience loss of water, reduced water pressure or discoloured water until normal service can be restored.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We apologise for any inconvenience and thank any affected customers for their patience and understanding.”
