Ferries and planes cancelled as thick fog descends on Western Isles

21 September 2024

Dense fog is blanketing many parts of the Western Isles this morning with a number of travel links affected.

The low-lying mist developed overnight and is expected to last well into the morning.

With the gloomy weather stubbornly slow to clear, transport service cancelled journeys during the first part of the day.

Almost zero visibility impacted Stornoway Airport, resulting in morning flights to and from Glasgow, Inverness, and Edinburgh being cancelled. Afternoon flights are anticipated to operate but that depends on the lingering fog dissipating in time.

The Glasgow service operating to Benbecula - the only flight for Balivanich Airport on Saturdays - was eventually cancelled despite earlier expectations of undertaking the flight.

CalMac inter-island ferries are on hold due to the restricted visibility conditions.

All morning sailings on the Barra - Eriskay and Sound of Harris links are cancelled.

Weather permitting, the next sailing from Beneray will be at lunchtime - which is the last timetabled return service for the day.
