Young teenagers face fire-raising charges    7/10/14

Three juveniles have been reported to the procurator fiscal and the Children’s Panel in connection with a fire which damaged a building in Stornoway town centre.

The trio - all aged 13 years - are accused over starting the blaze at the tenement at the Granite Building at 36 Cromwell Street.

No-one was reported injured as a result of the fire which was spotted around 2.40am on Friday morning.

A gale was blowing at the time and the expertise of fire-fighters in quickly getting the fire under control prevented flames sweeping through the rest of the premises and adjoining properties.

A police spokesperson said: “Two males and a female, all aged 13, have been jointly reported to the procurator fiscal and the Children’s Reporter in connection with the incident of fire raising.”

The fire wrecked the interior of Bliss Therapy beauty salon. A shared lobby was destroyed by flames - its floorboards were badly burnt.

There was also severe smoke damage to both the salon and neighbouring maisonette.

Four fire crews tackled the blaze. Eight fire personnel wore breathing sets to get closer to the flames in the choking smoke and searing heat. Other fire-fighters directed water jets from a high ladder.

Tenants in the adjoining flat have had to move out.

Hours earlier, a fire broke out in an outhouse immediately below the tenement access staircase. It was thoroughly extinguished by fire crews around 7pm on Thursday evening.

Bliss Therapy is temporarily operating from Unique beauty salon on Francis St and hopes to move into new premises at a later date.
