Scheme to boost teachers’ skills               3/4/14

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has been awarded a grant of £64,000 from the Scottish Government to support teachers undertaking a masters-level qualification in education.

The grant will cover fees for the course and supply cover for the school, allowing time for the teachers to undertake professional enquiry in one of the authority’s Gaelic teaching schools.

Teachers currently employed in Gaelic medium education in the Western Isles, or those aspiring to do so, are eligible to apply.

Education minister Mike Russell said: “The Scottish Government is committed to strengthening the teaching workforce in our schools and these new programmes will go a long way in helping teachers further their professional learning.”

Cllr Catriona Stewart, chair of Education, said, “This is a tremendous opportunity for teachers to receive support to extend their qualifications. We want the best for our schools, and to ensure that future leaders are well qualified and aware of best practice.”
