A man who stole items after forcing his way into a flat has been jailed.

 

John Rush of The Acres hostel, Island Road, Stornoway, pleaded guilty to housebreaking and stealing a lamp and a pair of scissors.

 

Stornoway Sheriff Court heard 34-year-old was abusive when arrested. He spat on and also tried to headbutt a police officer.

 

The court heard the a new tenant had just moved into the property on Plantation Road.

 

The locks had been changed but it was broken when the door was forced open.

 

In the early hours of 24 February, people heard a noise and called police. They spotted the accused standing nearby with items from the flat which belonged to the previous tenant.

 

Rush also admitted breaching a bail curfew. Police checked up on him on June 6 and discovered he was at another address in Stornoway at 2.15am.

 

Lawyer Katy Begg said Rush was heavily under the influence of drink and drugs at the time.

 

Sheriff John Halley heard sentenced him to a total of seven months.
