A rescue operation was launched after a swimmer was caught by a rip current at an island beach.

The woman was being dragged out to sea by the powerful current at Dalmore Beach on Lewis on Monday afternoon.

Spotting her predicament, a person on the shore dialled 999 for help.

Stornoway search and rescue helicopter flew to the scene. Coastguard rescue teams from Breasclete and Bragar as well as an ambulance crew also attended.

The swimmer managed to get out of the rip and made it back ashore by herself.

She was taken to the Stornoway hospital for a medical check.
