Former Western Isles MSP Alasdair Morrison said he is supporting Anas Sarwar in the Scottish Labour leadership race.

Alasdair Morrison - who represented the Western Isles in the first two terms of the Scottish Parliament until 2007 - said he is backing Mr Sarwar.

Mr Morrison said: “I’ve known Anas Sarwar for many years and I know he has the qualities to make a first-class, strong and inclusive leader of Scottish Labour.

“As Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary at Holyrood, Anas has ably exposed the SNP’s disgraceful mismanagement and neglect of our National Health Service. His passion for the NHS is informed by his years of service as a NHS dentist and by the social and health inequalities he is campaigning to reverse in his native Glasgow.

“Anas is travelling the country outlining his plans to make devolution actually work for everyone in Scotland. As the new energetic leader, Anas will set about tackling the ruinous and obsessive SNP centralisation agenda which has seen budgets savagely cut at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, HIE and the islands’ health board - damaging cuts which are impacting on every family in the islands.

“During the Scottish independence referendum, Anas led the distinct United with Labour campaign - visiting every community in Scotland. He knows better than most the corrosive nature of the politics which focuses on flags, borders and referenda. Scotland and the islands have endured a decade of neglect.

“I am confident that with Anas Sarwar as leader, the Labour Party will once again be in a position to win the trust of the people of Scotland.”
