Restrictions limiting the use of land may impede plans by the Scottish Co-op to extend its supermarket in Castlebay.

The retail group does not have enough ground to expand outwards and is seeking a parcel of council-owned land adjacent to their current site.

However, there is some doubt whether the land can be used for a shop, associated car parking or storage as it is a small section of a larger area which had a legal obligation to be only used as a playing field.

Playing field restriction may hamper supermarket expansion plans

1 December 2014

The deed is being examined to see if the restriction is still in force.

The Comhairle has long term plans to build business or commercial units in the area and is is understood to be willing, in principle, to transfer the land.

In payment, the Co-op is offering to pay for the upgrade of the wastewater system serving the area.
