An additional 2,000 Western Isles premises are expected to have new superfast internet connections available in their area within the next six months.

 

Parts of Back and Barvas in Lewis already able to order the new high speed services.

 

More connections will start coming through for some in Point and Shawbost within weeks.

 

Places including Ness, Callanish, Leverburgh, Lochmaddy and Scalpay should be reached in the Spring.

 

The forthcoming upgrades are planned for a number of areas covered by exchanges in Balallan, Berneray, Borve, Callanish, Carloway, Crossbost, Garrabost, Tarbert, Leverburgh, Lochmaddy, North Tolsta, Port Of Ness, Scalpay and Shawbost.

 

However, not all premises within selected areas will be able to access fibre-based broadband due to the terrain and economics of deployment.

 

The faster internet infrastructure is being rolled out under the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband project.
