Islanders falling through the superfast broadband net will have to wait years before any chance of an improved service through alternative channels.

Around 30% of Western Isles computer users will not be covered by mainstream faster internet speeds being delivered from the present fibre cable network being rolled out across the islands it is belived.

Up to 300,000 users across Scotland could be left behind.

The target date to connect everyone to faster speeds has been pushed back to 2021.

Now, the Scottish Government is asking potential suppliers to come up with ideas and information to fill the gap and "help shape our approach" with the intention to agree contracts early next year.

Connectivity Secretary, Fergus Ewing, said: "We are putting digital connectivity at the heart of our agenda and delivering 100% superfast broadband for Scotland by the end of the next Parliament is one of our priorities.

“Enhanced digital connectivity will improve the productivity of businesses and help to build economic growth in remote and rural areas, transforming the prospects for those who live there.

"We are making good progress, having met our interim target of 85% for the whole of Scotland six months ahead of schedule, but there is more we need to do to ensure we achieve our digital ambitions."
