A fishing boat has sunk in Stornoway harbour.

The shellfish trawler, MFV Prevail, flooded and went down while berthed at North Beach quay, near the fish mart.

Nobody was onboard it is understood.

The fire service raced to the scene when the alarm was raised around 10.40pm. Two tenders from Stornoway attended. Firefighters set up portable lighting and a thermal imaging camera.

They also donned lifejackets and used two portable pumps in a bid to try and stem the intake of water but the vessel was listing heavily to port and eventually floundered.

Stornoway coastguard rescue ream also attended and the lifeboat was launched.

The 16 metre long Prevail sank shortly before 11.30pm last night (Friday).

Stornoway lifeboat and Stornoway coastguards remained on scene, providing safety cover and monitoring for any signs of oil leakage from the boat. Harbour authority personnel deployed counter-pollution measures.
