Late summer start for new ferry 21/3/14
The new MV Loch Seaforth, is due to to come on service for the Stornoway to Ullapool route in late summer this year following fitting out, testing and certification.
The 116m roll on roll off vehicle passenger ferry will be capable of operating 24 hours a day and will have capacity for up to 700 passengers and 143 cars or 20 commercial vehicles.
The ship is being financed by Lloyd’s Banking Group, leased to Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) and operated by CalMac Ferries Ltd.
Grenville Johnston, chairman of CMAL said: “The launch is a very exciting stage of MV Loch Seaforth build and it is wonderful that we are also joined by the competition winner who helped name the vessel.
“This vessel is a fantastic new addition to the fleet and will serve one of our island communities for many years to come. We look forward to welcoming her to Scotland later this year.
“Today demonstrates CMAL’s commitment to providing lifeline ferries to communities on the Western Isles and the west coast of Scotland.”
The vessel was named MV Loch Seaforth by Mary Davidson from Lewis who attended the launch after winning a naming competition.
Transport Minister Keith Brown said: “Today’s launch is an exciting landmark for the MV Loch Seaforth as she moves a step closer to entering service.
“The vessel will offer passengers, cars and commercial vehicles using the Stornoway-
“I look forward to the MV Loch Seaforth taking to Scottish waters later this year and making use of the planned harbour upgrades at Stornoway and Ullapool.”
