Some £1,000 has been raised to help preserve a replica Lewis fishing sgoth.

The money from a fundraising ceilidh will help keep maintain and repair “An Sulaire,” a skiff or sail boat typical to Lewis  some 00 years ago.

The charity which looks after the vessel ran out of cash after major repairs  costing around £10,000. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar provided a vital grant to save the timber clinker-built vessel.

Some £2000 is needed annually to cover her running costs. The boat also requires further repairs in the near future.

An Sulaire Trust member Amanda Darling has stepped down as secretary after six months of frantic fundraising.

Amanda said its was “very satisfying to know that I have made a difference. I hope my successors have as much fun and enjoyment on the water and helping with maintenance and fundraising as I have had over the years and carry on the tradition to hand it over to a younger generation of islanders.

“As anyone who has volunteered knows and understands, it takes a lot of time and effort to keep these things running, but I have loved every minute of it."
