The landfall site of the proposed Minch subsea cable is planned to be shifted to Arnish near Stornoway.
Long standing proposals to build a convertor station at Gravir in South Lochs may be ditched in favour of siting it at Arnish Point.
Electricity from proposed windfarms on Lewis would pass through the plant before export through an interconnector to the mainland.
SSE has also revised the proposed route of the subsea cable.
The utility firm said it will publicly consult on its latest plans.
