Independence outcome going right to the wire     17/9/14

The independence referendum is set to go right to the wire with the latest poll for STV News showing both sides neck-to-neck.

Ultimately, the outcome may hinge on the people who say they are unsure which way they will go.

The polls suggested the No vote is edging ahead to 51% against 49% for Yes when the undecideds are taken out of the figures.

Among those who said that they are ‘absolutely certain’ to vote, 49% say they intend to vote No (down five percentage points from August), 47% say they will vote Yes (up by seven points), while 5% remain undecided.

Turnout for the referendum is now likely to be extremely high, according to Ipsos MORI, who conducted the poll for STV.

Some 95% of respondents said they are certain to vote, up 14 points from August.

97% of people over 54 years say they intend to vote while the figure is 90% for 16-24 year olds.

Mark Diffley, Director at Ipsos MORI Scotland said: "With hours to go now until the polls open it is clear that the result of the independence referendum is extremely close.”

He added: “‘Yes’ have made significant gains in recent week, to such an extent that the outcome is finely balanced.

“Both campaigns now will be entirely focused on persuading undecided voters and on ensuring that their supporters turn out to vote tomorrow."

he MORI poll comes as another opinion poll put No ahead of Yes by 52% to 48% with Don't Knows removed.

Other recent polls indicated a 52% - 48% trend in favour of Scotland staying within the UK when undecideds are excluded from the results.
