Proposed student flats will double up as tourism accommodation

5 June 2016

The proposed block of students' flats for Bayhead, Stornoway, would be rented out to tourists in the summer.

The 45 en-suite bedrooms would provide extra bed spaces for visitors when the students are on holiday.

Lews Castle College has applied for planning permission from Western Isles Council.

Mark McNamee, managing director of Cityheart, the specialist student developer acting for the college, said the four-storey block of student residences would be an asset for the town.

Mr McNamee said the the student flats would be used as extra tourism accommodation in the summer and rented out to visitors.

He added: "The additional supply of accommodation in Stornoway will add to the number of bed spaces during the summer period when availability is at a premium."

The extra students from outside the region attracted to study on Lewis will boost the local economy with extra spending in shops and restaurants as well as their families coming to visit, he said.

Planning officials recommend refusal of the development due to its design, scale, form and large size for the neighbouring conservation area.
