A Stornoway fishing boat has been rescued after taking on water.

The MFV Prevail lost engine power after incoming seawater knocked out its engine and her radio.

An emergency beacon was activated in the North Sea around 3am this morning.

The 16.5 metre long prawn boat had four crew onboard when she got into trouble as she steamed north from the north east of England.

She has been working shellfish grounds off North Shields in recent months.

A rescue helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth was sent to search for the stricken vessel.

Aberdeen and Montrose lifeboats were also summoned while other vessels joined the search.

She was later found 30 miles east of Montrose.

The Prevail was towed to port by Montrose lifeboat.

The 25-year-old wooden hulled twin rig boat is a relatively new addition to the Stornoway fleet.
