Friday’s ferry strike threatened to sink travel plans for a Uist-based group of sports people.

 

With the Sound of Harris ferry tied up due to an industrial dispute, 12 athletes and shooters setting off for the International lsland Games were going to be stuck at home while their team mates prepare to fly to Jersey.

 

The Hebridean squad are gathering in Stornoway on Friday evening before jetting off on a chartered plane.

 

Team Western Isles's main sponsors, the Scottish Salmon Company stepped in to pay for a chartered fast boat to take the stranded Southern Isles' contingent  over the crossing.

 

Boat operator David Steele of Uist Sea Tours is offering empty seats for just £10 per passenger on the two return voyages between Leverburgh and Berneray on Friday afternoon.
