A cat which stowed away on a yacht visiting the Western Isles has returned home.

The vessel sailed 170 miles from South Harris to Oban.

The cat was taken ashore to the vets and then into the care of Argyll Animal Rescue.

It was delivered back to Leverburgh where it is part of a feral colony which keeps rats and mice at bay around the pier.

Stowaway cat returns home

The fishermen feed the 15 strong group of semi-wild cats which stop vermin chewing holes in the netting on prawn creels.

A lady called Cathi Bertin picked up the cat from Argyll Animal Aid and drove up to the ferry on Skye and then to Harris where she was visiting family.

Jean Sutherland, of Argyll Animal Aid, said: "This was a door to door service for our little cat which was just great.

"We had our little stowaway in to the vet and had him neutered and health checked so he went back feeling like a million dollars.

She said other people offered to take him part of the way "but this was the better option as it meant no change-overs."
