A stowaway cat from Harris must be regretting not staying on dry land after ending up 170 miles from home.

The feline was found in Oban after slipping onboard a visiting yacht in Leverburgh.

The wandering sailor fits the description of a cat missing from a feral colony which keeps rats at bay around the pier.

Unseen, she pussyfooted onboard when the boat called into the South Harris port after returning from a trip to St Kilda.

The fishermen would welcome her home as the 15 strong group of semi-wild cats stop rats and mice chewing holes in the netting on prawn creels.

Argyll Animal Aid, which is looking after the cat, hopes the rat-catcher can hitch a lift with someone travelling in the opposite direction.

Jean Sutherland, chairwoman at at the cat santuary said: "The cat was found and taken to the vets. Then she came to us.

"We are trying to get it back to Harris where the creel fishermen feed the colony. They being back fish for the cats and, in return, the cats keep down the rats and mice.

"The fishermen are happy to have her and we are hoping to get her back."
