Stornoway Wind Farm gets grid connection offer 9/1/14
Lewis Wind Power (LWP), developers of the Stornoway Wind Farm, has confirmed that it has accepted a grid offer from National Grid, helping boost the case for the delivery of the new Western Isles grid connection.
The Stornoway Wind Farm received planning permission from the Scottish Government in September 2012.
It intends to build 36 turbines generating 130MW on moorland outside Stornoway.
A key aspect of preparing the project for construction is getting a connection onto the national grid to export the energy to the mainland.
This pivots on the much delayed go-head to build a subsea cable across the Minch.
John Buswell, project director for Lewis Wind Power said: “This is an important milestone for the Stornoway Wind Farm project and for the development of renewables in the Western Isles.
“The acceptance of the grid offer underlines our 130MW consented scheme as a major contributor to the economic case for the new subsea cable to the mainland.
“We will continue to work with the National Grid and Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission Ltd, together with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, UK and Scottish governments, the regulator and other developers on the island to secure the new Western Isles grid connection.”
