Teenagers sentenced for assault         18/2/13

An island teenager banned from stepping foot within the Western Isles is allowed to return - but only after he completes a 12 month custody sentence.

At Stornoway Sheriff Court, Donald Alexander Baxter Macphee received a year detention at a young offenders institution for a string of offences.

The 19-year-old whose address was given in court as Waverly Guest House, Inverness, previously admitted assaulting a Stornoway man.

His co-accused, John Hunter, 17,of 76 Parkend, Lewis, previously pled guilty to the offence. Hunter was placed on a two year community payback order including 200 hours of unpaid community service work. He was banned from drinking alcohol for 24 months and must obey a nine month curfew keeping him indoors between 8pm to 6am. He also accepted breaching bail and breaking a court imposed bail curfew.

Both accused admitted a charge of acting together to punch, kick and stamp the man about his face and body to his injury.

The incident occurred at the entrance road to the Stornoway Co-op on the night of Sunday 5 August last summer.

Macphee was given two hours to get off Lewis when he appeared at a custody court day after the assault. He was banned from returning except for court appearances.

However, he was found in Stornoway on 31 January - the day he also stole two bottles of whisky from Tescos. He admitted both these charges and received four months detention which was added to the eight months for the assault.
