The proceeds from a drag race held in memory of a Lewis youth who died suddenly from
an undiagnosed heart condition has been donated to a cardiac charity.
Lewis Car Club held the race in association with Highlands and Islands Airports.
The event at Stornoway airport was dedicated to club member Andrew ‘Tibby’ Macleod
- he owned a modified Skoda Fabia - who unexpectedly died in October 2011.
Drag race held in memory of young engineer 26/2/13
The 21-year-old engineering cadet (pictured above right) of Benside, near Stornoway,
was on his last trip at sea before sitting his ticket when he was found dead in his
cabin on the UK-flagged MV Ever Sigma berthed in Hong Kong harbour.
The death of the smiling, popular, easygoing youth shocked the island community and
many hundreds of mourners attended his funeral.
The sum of £1,735 was raised from the drag race and all funds raised were given to
the nominated charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) which is involved in raising
awareness of sudden heart defects death in youth.

The first drag race of 2013 is proposed for 1st June at Stornoway Airport and a number
of interesting mainland cars have expressed an early interest in taking part.
