Shop window public indecency               26/5/10

A 20-year-old Lewis man has been placed on the sex offenders register after he openly committed a sex act in a Stornoway high street.

Mark Reid admitted the public indecency incident when he appeared from custody in Stornoway Sheriff Court  today.

He pleaded guilty to committing a sex act in front of a female shop assistant who was working nightshift.

Procurator fiscal David Teale said Reid, of 6 Druim an Oil, Ranish, carried out the offence outside a shop window at 2am on Tuesday morning.

He was looking directly at the shocked woman who was working inside the Wee W shop on Cromwell Street. She alerted a colleague who witnessed the incident. He was also spotted by police on CCTV cameras.

Solicitor Kevin Macpherson said it was “beyond belief” why it occurred.

“It was a moment of madness and stupidity. He is ashamed, embarrassed and horrified at his actions.”

Sheriff David Sutherland placed Reid on the sex offenders register while background reports were prepared.

He banned the fisherman from the department store and ordered him to stay indoors between 8pm on Fridays until 2am on Mondays.

Reid was released on bail until sentencing.
