Stornoway man placed on sex offender register             27/9/14

A Stornoway man has been placed on the sex offenders register for ten years after he broke a court order banning him from going near young girls.

Ronald Campbell of 38 Plantation Road, Stornoway, was originally placed on the sex offenders register for engaging in sexual activity with a female aged under 16 years.

In May, a civil court order was imposed banning him from communicating with any female under 16 years.

In July, he was filmed speaking to a 13-year-old girl at Bayhead, Stornoway. He invited her to a nearby café.

Campbell admitted the charge when he appeared at Stornoway Sherrif Court this week.

Solicitor John McGeechan said it was an accidental conversation and he had now advised his client to be “rude and walk away” if a similar situation arose again.

Campbell had since spent 77 days in custody which has “sharpened his lax attitude,” said the lawyer

In addition, Campbell also failed to notify Stornoway police he had returned to the island after being released from Inverness Prison after he served a term for assault.

He was freed in January but did not tell police within the three day window allowed for sex offenders.

Sheriff David Sutherland jailed Campbell for eight months and placed him on the sex offenders register.

Under the rules, his sentence of over six months means he will remain on the register for ten years.
