Fire-fighters tackle blaze flare-up                 11/7/14

Fire-fighters have attended a wildfire which re-ignited in a strong breeze.

The blaze by the Lews Castle grounds, outside Stornoway, initially started on Thursday and was stopped from reaching a line of wooden poles carrying electricity onto the local grid from the Arnish sub-station.

Two acres of trees, bushes and heather have been destroyed.

Broken, very rough terrain with hidden burrows underneath tall grass and dense bracken hampered attempts to tackle the the fire outside the castle grounds, off the Arnish road.

Some 21 personnel from Stornoway, Shawbost and Tabert fire crews fought the flames for four hours on Thursday.

Remaining hotspots were monitored and an outbreak of flames resulted in two crews rushing back at 11.30am. They got it under control and returned to base at lunchtime.

Flames flared up again later and wafts of smoke, carried on the southerly wind, could be smelt in Stornoway town centre.

Fire-fighters dragging hoses 400 metres from the nearest water supply had to wade through high heather to reach the fire.

Rain is forecast for Stornoway on Saturday which should dampen down the ground and provide some respite for fire-fighters.
