A campaign has been launched to encourage Stornoway residents to leave the car at home to walk or get the bus in town.

People who work in Stornoway are also being urged to use alternative ways to travel around the town centre.

The HItravel initiative aims to reduce traffic and congestion, in addition to helping people be a bit more active.

People who live or have jobs in the town are being asked to walk, cycle, use public transport and car-share for some of their everyday journeys.

Project staff will be in touch with local residents and workers to offer information and advice on travel options.

Rather going door-to-door they will visit schools, council offices, workplaces, offices, the college and hospital to try and reach as many people as possible. They will also be speaking to community groups and attend events to promote their message.

Campaign to cut Stornoway traffic congestion

A HItravel spokesperson said: "The campaign will highlight that there are good alternatives to the car for many local journeys, and most drivers can save money on their motoring costs."

He said people could typically save

• Up to 15% by driving more efficiently

• Up to 30% by using the bus

• Up to 50% by car sharing with others

• Up to 100% of  fuel costs by walking or cycling for short journeys

He added: "Different journey choices don’t always take much longer either. For the shortest journeys, walking and cycling can often be as quick as driving and one of the easiest ways for most of us to get the exercise that we need, for free.

"Over the next few weeks, our team will be offering information and advice to local people about their travel options; including work with local schools, with individuals at their workplaces and at key community facilities."
