A 24-hour charity quilt-making event is taking place in Stornoway this weekend.

A hard core bunch of woman plan on making as many patchwork quilts as they can between 6pm on Friday and Saturday evening.

The finished quilts going to Moldova as well as the local Bethesda care home.

Organisers are appealing for old duvets for the event. But there’ll be no sleeping -  the duvets will be cut up and the filling used as wadding for the quilts.

The Carloway and Shawbost mills are donating tweed and other offers of fabric like old curtains and bedding from islanders will be gratefully accepted.

Co-ordinator Chris Hammacott said: “We will be making substantial quits which will be warm.”

Some will be used as lap quilts for people in Bethesda while many will sent on the next lorry out to Moldova destined for the elderly and orphans.

Sewers and volunteers helpers are also sought - even to assist for the odd hour or two.

Ms Hammacott added: “We expect a hard core group of around 12 to 15 people to be there and we hope most of them will do the full 24 hours.

“People could come in for a half hour or so - they don’t need to have sewing skills - and they could help sort out fabrics or cut out template shapes.”

“Even youngsters could do things like cutting fabric in squares and sort out colours.”

The event is taking place in the Masonic Hall in Stornoway.

Donations of fabric, duvets or sewing thread can be dropped off at special collection bins in Anderson Road Nurseries, Tesco and the Co-op stores.

Co-ordinator Chris Hammacott can be contacted on 01851 820 029.
