Stornoway Port has appointed specialist consultants Fisher Advisory to deliver an updated masterplan for the port estate and surrounding area to outline its long-term strategy and vision.

When completed, the new plan will provide a strategic blueprint for the development of the port. It will align infrastructure investment with emerging opportunities and ensure that the harbour continues to play a vital role in supporting the regional Western Isles economy.

The port authority’s original masterplan, also produced by Fisher Advisory, was issued in 2017, with several key components - including the £59 million deep water terminal and Goat Island projects – now successfully delivered.

Significant changes in market conditions, particularly the acceleration of offshore wind development, now mean that an updated plan is essential to position the port effectively for the opportunities ahead.

The updated masterplan will review development potential across the wider island area, exploring opportunities beyond the core port estate where these can add strategic value. The process will be delivered in close collaboration with key stakeholders over the next six months and will include extensive consultation with customers, the community, funders and government partners.

Alex Macleod, chief executive of Stornoway Port, said: “Delivering this updated masterplan is a crucial milestone in preparing the Port for the next phase of its development.

“A lot has changed since the 2017 masterplan, not least the rise of offshore renewables as a key growth sector for the Western Isles. This updated approach will ensure that we focus our efforts, avoid misdirected investment, and provide a clear vision for staff, customers, Government, and our community.

“The pace of market change and the scale of opportunity means that this is the right time to set our sights to the future and ensure we are future-ready.”

Chris Fisher, director of Fisher Advisory, said: “We are pleased to once more support Stornoway Port in shaping an updated masterplan. Building on the strong foundation already in place, we aim to fully integrate the emerging sectors that will define the Port’s future success. Our focus is on creating a deliverable plan that supports infrastructure readiness, attracts investment, and gives confidence to all stakeholders.”
