Early proposals to upgrade two empty hotels in Stornoway have been revealed.

Potential operators are in talks with Punch Taverns, the owners of the Crown and the Caledonian hotels, with investment plans to refurbish the buildings.

The changes are not finalised. However, one potential operator proposes making the present public bar in the Caledonian into a lounge bar which could show TV  sports games and serve meals.

Turning the present ground floor lounge bar into a restaurant - coffee shop is one option being explored.  In addition to tourists the hotel could market its meeting spaces as suitable for business and conference use.

The Crown Hotel could be renamed the Crown Inn with the public bar called the Harbour Bar showing TV sports and wi-fi provision.

The long disused door on Castle Street may be brought back into its use as an entrance to the first floor for access to the upstairs restaurant - called Harbour View - under a plan by one of the interested parties who also proposes providing a value-for-money menu to attract families and diners. The hotel decor would also be modernised.

A Punch Taverns spokesperson said the final design depends on which operator they go into partnership with.

The spokesperson said: "We can confirm we have submitted planning applications in line with our refurbishment plans and we await the outcome.

“We are still actively recruiting a tenant and currently in negotiations with interested operators with a view to start the refurbishments as soon as possible."
