Dutch company for harbour works contract  18/2/14

Dutch contractor BAM Nuttall has been announced as the preferred bidder for the £12 million redevelopment works at Stornoway harbour.

The works - from early April - will see new infrastructure built for the arrival of a new £42 million ferry.

The MV Loch Seaforth is due to commence a combined passenger and freight service in the slate summer from the main ferry terminal in the port.

Under the Stornoway Port Authority’s plans, part of the seabed at south east corner of the ferry terminal area will be filled-in. Cars will encounter a different road layout when visiting the terminal with terminal from the usual entranace but entrign the po

The gap between the end of the number three pier and the berthing dolphin will be infilled and stronger dolphins and fenders installed as the new ferry is bigger and heavier than the ship.

Onshore, expansion onto vacant land will give extra space for a reconfigured parking and freight marshalling area.

In addition, expansion onto vacant land by the James Street roundabourt will give extra space for a reconfigured parking and freight marshalling area.

Subject to the agreement of final contracts and last minute improvements to the development plans, BAM Nuttall will resource and deliver the construction element of the project which will also involve a substantial amount of work for local sub-contractors.

The contractor - part of the Royal BAM Group of the Netherlands - has been involved in the works for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the redevelopment of Kings Cross, major tunnelling works for Crossrail and creating the Borders Railway.

Some £9 million has been secured from the Scottish Government through Transport Scotland. The port authority’s contribution amounts to just over £2 million. The overall level of investment in the Stornoway to Ullapool route is estimated to be around £60 million.

During the construction works in Stornoway it is planned that the Isle of Lewis will operate from Pier No. 1 from early April, allowing the contractors greater access to work on Pier No. 3

The Loch Seaforth’s hull is being launched on 14th March and due to be delivered in July prior to taking up the route in August.

The MV Isle of Lewis will be laid up in Stornoway until the new vessel is bedded in and running a reliable service.

Speaking for the Port Authority, Chief Executive Jane Maciver said “We are very pleased to have reached this stage of the project. If everything continues to go smoothly we hope to be in a position to formally award the contract at the end of this month. With a very tight timescale we expect a start on site as soon as contract is awarded.

The works required over the next eight months will cause inevitable delays and disruptions to normal routines and for that we apologise in advance. If you require any further information, or have issues at any time during the works please do not hesitate to get in touch through the harbour office.”
