Fault which caused boat to sink is discovered       11/9/14

A leaking seal caused the sinking of Stornoway Port Authority’s harbour launch.

The MV Pathfinder was discovered submerged under the water at her moorings in Stornoway marina last week.

A walker taking a stroll through the castle grounds raised the alarm after spotting the sunken craft on Wednesday morning.

The heavy weight of seawater within her twisted the pontoon she was still tied to.

Nobody was onboard at the time.

An inspection indicated the seal - or gland - around the propeller shaft - where it passes through the vessel’s stern - was at fault and allowed water to enter.

Though the final insurance company report is still awaited, port authority chief executive Jane Maciver said the cause was strongly suspected as a leaking shaft seal.

The harbour launch is a Mitchell 31, Mark III type of vessel. It was purchased this summer with plans to use her as a replacement pilot boat. In good condition, the model can sell for between £40,000 to £80,000.

A swift salvage operation appears to have prevented much salt water from entering or ruining her engine.

A large floating crane working on the nearby new pier construction works was commandeered to lift the boat out of the water.

After the sinking was discovered, an oil pollution prevention boom was placed around the sunken vessel to minimise any spread of leaking fuel.
