Stornoway Port Authority has announced two new members to its board.

Ian Burgess was for 30 years with H M Coastguard, and until recently was the senior officer based in Stornoway but with responsibility from Shetland to Belfast. Previously, he was a deck officer in the Merchant Navy.

The board said Mr Burgess has considerable experience in strategic planning at board level, administration, shipping and usage of port facilities as well as safety management systems and auditing protocol. He has been a co-opted member of the port authority since August 2014.

Iain Don Maciver has worked at Stornoway Harbour for over 22 years. For the last 10 years Mr Maciver has been Cal Mac’s port manager at Stornoway.  Mr Maciver has experience in administration, shipping and other forms of transport, usage of port facilities, and information technology.

Both men were interviewed late month by a panel comprising Murdo A. Murray,  the vice chairman of Stornoway Port Authority,  Iain M. Mackay the General Manager of Stornoway Fishermen’s Co-operative as a stakeholder representative, and  Fred Silver the owner of Intermedia Services as an independent person.

The interview panel was unanimous in recommending both applicants as being suitable for appointment.

Meanwhile, Murdo A. Murray has been unanimously appointed as chairman.

Captain Robert J. M. Frater stood down as interim chairman - he stepped into the post in November until the new harbour master and chief executive were recruited. Capt Frater continues to serve as a board member.

Tony Morrison started as harbour master on 11 May while Alex. D. Macleod has indicated he will take up post as chief executive on 20th July.
