Investigation after islander dies after house fire

3 July 2017

No one else was injured in the fire on Saturday night which is believed to have occurred to the rear of the ground floor property within a block of four flats at the roundabout between Macaulay Road and Perceval Road.

The islander was taken to hospital in Stornoway but later died.

The property has been cordoned off and police continue to maintain a presence outside the flat.

Detective Inspector Richard Baird of Police Scotland said: "A joint investigation with the fire service will be carried out.

“Enquiries are at a very early stage.

"As is standard a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

The alarm was raised shortly before 7.40pm on Saturday night.

Fire and ambulance crews attended as did police.

The man is yet to be formally identified but his next of kin have been informed.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 7.37pm on Saturday, July 1 the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service responded to a house fire at Macaulay Road in Stornoway.

“Three appliances attended and crews extinguished the fire using high-powered hoses.”

An investigation has been launched after a Stornoway man died following a fire in his home.

The 58-year-old lived in a flat in Macaulay Road in Manor Park.
