A Stornoway supermarket has been evacuated following a fire alert.

The Co-op's Macaulay Road store shut after a fuse box - connected to the shop’s internal electricity supply - blew up with a loud bang.

It is understood staff extinguished the fire immediately.

Two fire crews from the nearby Stornoway fire station attended the incident around 3.30pm.

Customers were ushered outside and staff were told to leave their posts.

Workers waited for an hour outside until they were told it was safe to go back in.

However, the store is still closed to shoppers tonight.

Hundreds of customers were turned away from the supermarket, creating a boost for the rival Tesco store on the other side of town.
