Ferry back on course as steering is made safe                      5/3/14

The steering problems affecting the Stornoway ferry MV Isle of Lewis have been fixed, according to Caledonian Macbrayne.

Faults with her rudder arose last month during her first commercial sailing on the Stornoway to Ullapool route following a three week absence for her annual refit.

Despite a number of attempts, inspections and repairs could not be achieved while she was stuck in Ullapool.

It took another week to make her safe to steam and for her to steam to drydock in Liverpool after it was determined that engineers required to repair her out of the water.

Once in drydock the fault did not take relatively long to assess and fix.

She was refloated on Wednesday and has left the Mersey. She is due to arrive in Stornoway on Thursday evening.

A Cal Mac spokesman said: “The rudder on the MV Isle of Lewis has been repaired and she is now en-route to Stornoway.

“Weather permitting and subject to no further issues arising, she is expected to resume the Stornoway-Ullapool service at 7am on Friday morning.”

The only ship available at present to cover the busy route is the much smaller MV Isle of Arran.
