The coastguard rescue helicopter from Stornoway has been involved in airlifting oil workers following a fire onboard a production vessel in the West of Shetland sea area.

The aircraft flew to the Foinaven Petrojarl floating storage ship 160 miles north east of Stornoway on Saturday afternoon.

She was joined by the Shetland coastguard helicopter to transfer 30 personnel to safety on nearby installations.

A BP spokesman said: "The incident, involving a fire in a store room, was quickly brought under control and 30 non-essential personnel were safely transferred to nearby installations as a precaution.”

The Foinaven field is situated approximately 120 miles west of the Shetland Isles within the Faroes/Shetland Trough.

Oil production from the location was suspended last year.

FPSO Foinaven Petrojarl has operated in BP’s Foinaven field for 25 years and is now being decommissioned after reaching the end of its design life.
